A tradition common to all Eastern Christians, Pure Monday (Kathari Devtera) marks the beginning of Great Lent, a seven-week period when the faithful prepare for Easter. The Orthodox, Armenians and Maronites of Cyprus, even if they are not very religious, still tend to follow this custom of no longer eating meat.
