ENGRAVINGS BY DOMINGO GARCÍA

Archaeological site

On the edge of the road between Santa María la Real de Nieva and Bernardos (parking), you can take a few steps among the numerous open air engravings that adorn the rocks. With the site of Siega Verde, it is one of the most important fields of petroglyphs on the peninsula: no fewer than 200 figures have been listed, with a very large majority of horses and deer. There are also some goats and bison. The rocks also inspired the artists of the Middle Ages who added scenes of fighting on horseback, dances, arms…

ENEBRALEJOS CAVE

Archaeological site

The cave was used as a necropolis in the bronze age and was the subject of several excavations during which the older traces of human attendance were uncovered. The visit is therefore interesting to more than one title and includes, apart from the rock heritage, an archaeological area and village reproduction, not to mention, of course, the geological interest. In the course of the visit, many concretions and multicolores natural sculptures can be observed.

Some paintings and hundreds of engravings are present in the cave. These are essentially signs and symbols or simply of geometric, grouped or isolated forms. The paintings are made to carbon despite the presence of manganese oxide in the cave, and represent anthropomorphic motifs.

CHUFÍN CAVE

Archaeological site

The cave had long been known to the villages surrounding the villages, but it was only in the early 1970 s that it was the subject of a excavations campaign that would update all the treasures it contains. With a rather modest size, she houses beautiful engravings and red paintings depicting deer, goats and bovines. Some of them are depicted in full strokes and others, as in the cave of Covalanas, dotted. The cave was also used as a residential space at the Solutréen.

The large central panel of the vestibule is certainly the most admirable in the cave. There is a bison and biches as well as a fish, which is more rare in the Cantabrian caves. Inside, you will also note an anthropomorphic silhouette, which is also very rare for this time. But it is mainly for the quantity of signs and symbols made at the point of the finger that the cave of Chufín owes its reputation. We find it in many places, without linking them, and without knowing its meaning. Codes, plans, first drafts of beliefs? Signs in prehistoric times do not have their Rosette stone yet and keep their mystery for them.

GROTTE EL BUXU

Archaeological site

Near the village of Chard, the cave of Buxu, discovered in 1916, presents beautiful animal engravings as well as some symbols and geometric signs dated from Solutréen and Du. The excavations at the beginning of the last century also made it possible to find many pieces of pieces of furniture such as a bird carved on the croc of a cave bear. Without being a place of continuous habitation, the cave of Buxu served as a camp during hunting periods.

LA CUEVONA DE ARDINES

Archaeological site

Known as the tennis cave, because its imposing size - 50 metres out of 25 and a ceiling of 30 metres - would easily make it easy to build a land, the Cuevona is a typical cathedral cave, offering huge volumes and massive natural sculptures. The size of the spaces, composed of small, medium and large rooms, made it possible to organize concerts and even a wedding! The visit is very easy because the paths and stairs were very easy to fit.

Discovering, scientifically speaking, in 1856, it would be worth more exploration campaigns. The soil, beyond the spaces reserved for visitors'wanderings, is literally littered with remnants of shells, bones, tools and carved stones. On the walls, it is assumed that some traces correspond to paintings erased by water. The Cuevona was certainly inhabited, like the cave of Tito Bustillo adjacent to which it is connected by an underground river.

SOTO DOLMEN

Archaeological site

Lost in the fields, the Dolmen de Soto was discovered by chance in 1923. It is one of more than 200 megalithic monuments found in Huelva province, erected between the Neolithic and the bronze age. If the region has many megaliths of this type, it distinguishes itself by its size. The gallery is part of a circle of stones, unfortunately disappeared, which originally reached 75 metres in diameter, which is the longest dolmen in Spain. As in Campo Lameiro, the dolmen is buried under an artificial hill. The building had several functions: it was buried in a mother and a child, whose skeletons were found, but certainly also in terms of timing and observatory. The stone blocks supporting the roof of the gallery are all engraved with signs and symbols.

In the interpretation centre, a documentary in synthetic images details the construction of the dolmen by the population of a neighbouring village whose traces were found at 400 m from the site. A second film focuses more closely on the symbols found in the gallery.

With the dolmen approach, please note the ambulatory, which is still visible on the ground and which did the entire round of hill. Some stones remained, but most disappeared, parts for the construction of houses around or used as galleries to attend the bullfighting, as shown in the ground of the arena, which encroaches on the mound. We enter the latter with a 21 m long gallery and at the end of which the ceiling height reaches 3,5 m. The biggest stone supporting the whole weighs over 20 tons! Excavations carried out during his discovery found 8 skeletons, including that of a child. Most of them had a very large number of engravings: daggers, anthropomorphic silhouettes or symbols adorn stones in different places, without a precise reading or interpretation of the stones.

The restoration of the site has been very well conducted. The interpretation centre, drowned in the landscape, is almost invisible and the lighting of the gallery has been thought of so as to highlight the engravings.

In 2015, the municipality sought to acquire part of the adjacent field where there is a second dolmen, a little smaller dolmen that has not yet been subjected to full excavations and studies. Early research in the 1920 s found the skeletons of 18 to 20 individuals, some crouching and supported against walls and others lying on their backs. So the site is still far from having delivered all its secrets.

CAVE OF THE BATS (CUEVA DE LOS MURCIELAGOS)

Archaeological site

The visit begins with the Ecomuseum ecomuseum who presents the cave ecosystem. Its formation, the secondaires and the secondary cavities, the water circuit… everything went on to show you the scenes! You can also slip into the skin of a bat and move in the cave by getting from its point of view. Attention, tight turns…

The visit of the cave takes about 1 hour. Unfortunately, there will not always be a bats, the tourist attendance long ago prompted tenants to move. In the 1950 s, there were no fewer than 15 000 bats, but only a few specimens attached to them were still volettent. You will therefore be able to concentrate on the geological and archaeological aspect of the visit. Engravings have been discovered there recently. In 2002, scientists noticed a sign that until then had escaped them and on which a deer, bovidé and bear were found. But here are the goats that predominate: There are no fewer than 56 ancient Neolithic engravings. Dated 4300 to 3900 years before our age, these are the first drawings of the Neolithic found in Western Andalucia. Among other reasons, one would note an anthropomorphic and another, more enigmatic, which could be an owl.

The journey of the visit takes us down 65 m, until the place where, voluntarily, a woman was buried about 4 000 years ago in a foetal position. We are still wondering about the motivations that have led men to undertake such a well-equipped to bury this woman precisely here, in a very difficult place of access where it is possible to break his neck every step (rest assured, stairs have been built since). Take the time to admire the geological formations of the cave, especially interesting, with numerous stalagmites and stalactites. They are so many in a room that the latter was called the organ room. The visit is in several stages, with the first discovery of the vestibule, which serves a number of galleries that have enabled a circuit to be set up in 8. The gallery of paintings, with goats, precedes the training room, of more geological interest. Corridors and halls follow up to the lowest point, before they go back almost half a kilometre underground. The entire cave is much larger and reaches 2 km.

PEÑA CAVE

Archaeological site

The cave was severely damaged after its discovery in 1914, in particular by the work of development resulting from its tourist attendance. In order to preserve what could still be, the Peña remained closed to the public between 1979 and 1994, and opened its doors only for a well defined and limited number of visitors. Access to the large hall, by a biscornue gallery, is not easy and is discouraged for children under the age of 7.

The large painting hall has six panels dated Gravettien (from -31 000 to -22 000 years) in Magdalénien (-17 000 to -12 000 years). The most notable, with its fifty superimposed engravings, is reproduced at the Interprétation interpretation centre. But the cave is known mainly for the "camarín": a cavity in height, very difficult to access, decorated with horses and cattle. If you take care, you will notice that the silhouettes appear as if they were faced, while they are located much higher than we. The artist played with the prospect to give this effect and, very closely, animals would appear disproportionate. Moreover, the layout and the shape of the rock give the impression of watching a theatre scene or a movie screen, which speaks volumes about the taste and art of staging in our ancestors!

CANDAMO INTERPRETATION CENTER

Archaeology

The cultural centre of Candamo, housed in a former palace, houses the centre of interpretation of the cave where you can observe a small scale reproduction of the Peña. It is interesting to go there before the visit in situ, because the original paintings are damaged and difficult to discern in the cave itself, while the colours have obviously been accentuated on the reproduction. You can thus exercise your eye and do nothing. The most important panel consists of over 50 figures, the oldest of which is more than 30 000 years old, that is, a age comparable to the paintings of the cave of Chauvet. The most recent bulls are 10 000 years old. At the top left of the panel, anthropomorphic figures are noted.

Two other rooms exhibit photographs of the other caves in the region as well as a reproduction of the main panel of the Grotte cave.

LA LLUERA CAVE

Archaeological site

From Las Caldas, first of all, it takes the church San Juan de Priorio. From here, a pleasant little walk (30 minutes) leads you to the edge of the river, to the shelter under rock.

The cave of Lluera was discovered in the 1970 s. It was inhabited 18 or 19 000 years ago, until 10 500 years ago on the basis of sediment dating.

At the entrance to the cave on the left, note the great burning of horse. Inside the cave, in the form of a horseshoe, the engravings are more difficult to identify for an uninformed eye, because most are intertwined and drawn on each other during different periods: the horns of some deer are used for example to make bison belly. Depending on the orientation of the light, however, it was devinera on the largest panel of biches, bison and horses. A group of 4 bison appears more clearly on the left-hand side and has a beautiful perspective.

Note that the engravings stop precisely at the maximum place where the light is worn and the cave does not contain any engraving or drawing in its darkest part.

In the Lluera 2, a second smaller cave, a little upstream on the river, we can observe geometric signs, including some triangles and, in the center, a biche.

To make better use of this energy, part of the current passed through the different pesqueras that allowed the water to be distributed in the canals. During this tour, you will be able to observe those of Los Caballos, Los Capitanes, Tapia or Los Ladrones, as well as the companies located on the banks, some of which were essential to the development of Béjar. Throughout this walk you will find informative signs. At the end or at the beginning of the journey, visit the Textile museum, located in an old factory.

THE MEDIEVAL WALL

Monuments to visit

The city possessed two successive walls, of medieval origin, the first of the th century and the second of the late th century, built at the request of Alfonso VIII to expand and strengthen the defences of the city, following the route of the first. But it is the first that Béjar retains important remains, especially in its western part, with the gates del Pico and San Pedro, the usual entrance in the city in the Middle Ages. It this is the first stretch of approximately 400 metres, between the two doors, which you can browse in full. You will find another trace of this wall behind the Ducal Palace, its original point. The second wall resisted until the end of the th century and was gradually destroyed to build houses or roads. There are still small remains in some houses or gardens, but it's mostly the pictures that make it possible to make an idea. In particular, you can see them at the Jewish Museum of the city, the David Melul Museum.

YECLA DE YELTES

Archaeological site

Start your visit by the Archaeology Museum (+34 923 500 702) which is located on the central square of the village. You will see, around a large model reproducing the site, all traces of the past of Yecla la Vieja, revealed by excavations: ceramics, funéraires, engravings. An expo on beliefs and daily life helps to illuminate the historical parts, you will then be more able to visit the archaeological site and find the few engravings that centuries have left there.

The Gisement Gisement deposit is located at the exit of Yecla de Yeltes (free access, parking at the entrance), in a territory of about five hectares. It is a pre-Roman settlement, occupied then under the Roman Empire and then the visigoth kingdom. It was completely abandoned in 1174. It is discovered through two interpretive paths. The shortest (850 metres) makes a quick turn through the interior while the longest (1 200 metres) makes the complete tour of the walls. In the centre, dominating the ancient ramparts, a hermitage was built at the entrance of what was the village and which remains a few foundations of walls. A village of Celtic huts was reconstituted away from the main street and hosts life scenes in the Bronze Age every year in April. About metres away, on the right, you can see at the western door a deer engraved on one of the blocks of stone supporting the outer wall. From there, a path leads to the cemetery where, in 2012, two tombs and skeletons were discovered, all in the same position. By returning to the village and pursuing the south-west door, you will have the opportunity to see further well-preserved engravings, especially one of the riders hunting a wild boar.

SIEGA VERDE

Archaeological site

Siega Verde and Côa, located on the other side of the border, in Portugal, form the largest set of rock engravings in the free air of the Iberian Peninsula. If the presence and location of the engravings had long been known to local populations, especially shepherds, no one suspected their age. It was only in 1988 that a excavations campaign uncovered the engravings as a whole, by cleaning the foams and lychens them. We are then aware of their seniority and importance. Prior to being classified as a World Heritage for Humanity, in 2010, the site unfortunately remained for many years in free access and suffered a great deal of damage and vandalism. Guided tours, therefore, are limited to 5 rocks decorated on a normal visit or 14 rocks on a long visit. The entire site has 646 engravings in total.

The visit begins with that of the interpretation centre. Supported on the rock, with a very red hue due to its high iron oxide content, the first room offers each reading several thematic spaces: the face of Europe 20 000 years ago, the main discoveries of rock art in Europe, the tools used for engravings, dating methods… A documentary then plunges us into the everyday life of those who have thus decorated the rock blocks on the shores of the Río River for centuries.

It is then the descent to the shores of the río where the engravings are concentrated, over 1 km. Their density is exceptional, since they are more than in Côa, where they span a surface of 20 000 km 2. A total of five rocks are the tour route, but many others are scattered around the circuit for conservation purposes. 91 rocks decorated with engravings were recorded in total. The visible sample nevertheless very well reflects what the site can offer: a large set of representations of animals carried out on schist outcrops scattered on the left bank of the Águeda River, carried out with incision or picketing techniques. The figures are usually presented in small groups of 2 to 6 associations in medium and large size panels, but there are also many isolated figures represented on small rocky outcrops. It is more likely an area of passage than a residential area. The natural corridor created by the Río River was followed by animals, themselves followed by hunters.

In the representations of Siega Verde, the horse is the dominant animal. The first set of engravings visible on the site presents a 90 cm horse design, surrounded by four smaller ones. The guided tour will help you distinguish between each other's figures and even identify them because some of them are really difficult to discern.

If you push down to the foot of the bridge, you will see that one of the pillars has been built on an engraved rock and one can see on the latter the body of a horse by the head cut by the book. The workers at the time had not even seen what they had saccagé! However, their action was not so harmful: the intact part has been protected from the current during the flood by the pillar and is very well preserved.

The interpretation centre team organizes night visits (8 people. maximum), which makes it possible to highlight engravings with torches. On reservation (10 pers. maximum), a more extensive visit of the site, with 14 rocks instead of 5, is also possible, counting a full day. Guided tours are offered in English and French.

Paintings were discovered in 1954. Open to the public in 2007, it offers plenty of space to accommodate scenographic spaces and also to the geological observation with beautiful concrete all along the walls. The paintings are concentrated in a sector hundreds of meters from the entrance, which, like Covalanas, assumes that they were in total darkness and visible only by artificial lighting. THE ATALAYAS ROAD

Local history and culture

It is one of the key elements to understand the position and function of a frontier town like Alcalá la Real. During the lower Middle Ages, this system served as a communication system between cities, and the region had many. Those who saw Lord of the Rings will have a little idea of what a fire ignition system means to give the alarm. Today, there are only nine towers and the road dedicated to them can walk through the tower of Moraleja y del Cascante, from downtown. Next to the last tower is the Fuente del Rey, with an old lace, and the church Santa Ana, dating back to the sixteenth century.
