As pensions disappeared in Ribeira Brava, there is no longer much choice for small budgets. This well-placed hotel, opening beautiful views, has 70 spacious and well-equipped rooms, even if the decoration dates a little, some enjoy a balcony… Despite the bonus of a swimming pool on the roof, the general state of the establishment would ask for complete renovation, but in view of its price it remains correct for one step. Very courteous welcome.

Between Santana and Faial, near the collar. In full nature, this small family pension offers various well-equipped rooms (especially in the second building, which is worth the financial sacrifice, the main structure being an austere one), 40 minutes from Santana on the trails. Beautiful views of the mountains of the Eiras, superb sunrise. In contrast, the two typical Santana huts are not being attacked by tourists as well as the tourist office, and they are equally beautiful.

Located at 1 400 m above sea level, the hotel offers 27 comfortable and comfortable rooms, equipped with the necessary (heating, especially!), balcony and mountain tours and valley, bathroom (with dryer) and less useful amenities in this place of exceptional surrounding nature: Satellite TV, wireless internet… The situation is excellent and convenient for walking in the nearby Rabaçal Park and the south-west coast, Porto Moniz in the north west and the Paul da Serra plateau. Many outdoor activities are organized to benefit the best of nature: jeep safari, cycling or walking, canyoning, paragliding… The restaurant meets the funny name of Jungle Rain Cafe (approximately 25 € for a full meal). Here you are offered traditional local and international cuisine, starters, grilled meats and fish, choose the cod has lagareiro, duck to orange or pork to chataigne, it is delicious - all flambés dishes are made in front of you, a rich wine card and desserts are home to one of Venezuelan origin. Its exotic decor plunges us into the universe of a tropical forest, if there is not too much wind, one can sit and rest quietly after a good walk. Many travellers stop to drink, after a long walk, or to admire the views by allowing themselves to be invaded by the peace of mind. The complex in the correct service also includes the Churrascaria, Pastor do Paul (15 € for a complete meal), where you can eat outdoor grills and without any manners, salads, pizzas or typical mountain dishes. The interior looks like a rustic wooden chalet, onions and garlic from the ceiling, ham smoked on the counter. It is simple but effective.

A 5-minute walk from the city centre, here is a well-kept and good value for money. The rooms on the rear have a small covered balcony in summer, to choose as a priority, because rooms facing the street do not always have a balcony and can be sometimes a little noisy. Repainted walls and renovated bathrooms contribute to impeccable sharpness. The annex, at two steps, has a little less character, but is brighter. The rooms, even more recently, are more limited. The annex does not have a lift, unlike the parent house and sometimes you have to climb 5 floors. Breakfast is served in the common dining room or on the lovely sun terrace. You can also enjoy another terrace on the roof of the annexe. Paid pay parking is located opposite the hotel. Good reception… in French, more.

In front of the church, Mr. and Mrs. Fernandes make hotel, restaurant, supermarket, butchery and taxi. The address is not expensive, the owners are charming and the whole is suitable. Some rooms with a decoration that may not enjoy everyone, but pure juice!

In the mountain, 3 typical houses of the region, each for two people. Superb panorama, garden and barbecue outside, all independently. Reservations are made at the Santana tourist office (Sítio do Serrado).

In the heart of the village, Mrs. Uriblina rents a small triangular house to visitors for typical, although very modest, accommodation. A nice and relaxed welcome.

Above the swimming pools, a central set of 10 rooms a little cramped but still honest for the price, some even with small balconies. Downstairs, a bar and restaurant, offering cheap dishes.

One of the cheapest establishments in the corner. This small two storey guesthouse with its country house garden has nine small rooms, four of which are white kitchenettes. All, one hundred times more attractive than the hotels in perpetual expansion that annexed the seafront.

Seven bedrooms and an apartment on the beach, in a large villa, a rather suitable, welcoming and family set. Fiona the mistress of the house is welcoming. We would say almost paradise!

All rooms are bright and clean in a contemporary structure lost in vegetation. Relax in the garden, enjoy the swimming pool (heated in winter) and try the two restaurants, including the gastronomic and Mediterranean Casa da Quinta. Provide an average ticket from 40 €, at lunch, and 50 €, at dinner to let you go to the octopus of octopus, to the roquette shrimp risotto and blown in the fruit of passion… A relaxing, attractive and refined place of stay. Property of the Dorisol chain, this hotel of 107 rooms and studios has nice small apartments with balcony and kitchen, although past from fashion. In the absence of state-of-the-art global equipment, high-performance insulation and air conditioning, prices remain reasonable, especially in low season. Swimming pools (indoor and outdoor) and proximity to many restaurants add to the strengths.

Close to the beach and close to shops and restaurants, a 3-star hotel in the centre with a hundred rooms unequal with no great stamp and not always quiet. Surely not a first choice despite a small pool, bar and table tennis.

On the heights of Machico, a set of very suitable rooms. As a bonus, a large, panoramic restaurant of classic madérienne cuisine with breathtaking views over the bay.

It is the most recent official youth hostel on the island, inaugurated in August 2009. Close to the city center, part of the building is the result of the restoration of the old Pensão Figueira. It offers 52 beds distributed in 15 rooms (14 multiple rooms with WC and 2 doubles with private toilet). Reservations must be confirmed according to advance payment (10 days in low season and 1 month in high season). Santana, known for the simplicity of typical houses, quite close, and hosting a significant plot of the laurel forest - declared the heritage of humanity by UNESCO in 1999 - the hostel is classified as nature inn/adventure.

Within a residential area, less than a kilometre from the old town of Funchal, with a nearby bus stop, this renovated traditional quinta and its recent, surrounded by gardens, enjoy quality rooms. Among the different offers of the Madérienne capital of Funchal, after contemporary intervention, you can find comfortable rooms with a fairly successful modern decoration. Associated with the Molhe club, a little unique in its style with its terrace, a beautiful view over the bay of Funchal, we are told that its proximity service contributes to a successful stay!

This set of moderately calm - the street is narrow and very high in this place (sometimes animated also in the evening because the place of rendez-vous) - has 21 rooms and 6 studios (2 people) which have no special charm (in a style in a 1970-80 style) but have the advantage of being very central and cheap. Simple welcome, summary comfort. Not bad enough to cure.

Small, welcoming structure with clean and spacious rooms. If you are lucky, you can even enjoy a balcony and a beautiful view of the city. There is no restaurant, only a bar, but in the commanding the day before, you can lunch or dinner very properly for a small budget (15 to 30 € depending on appetite). The staff were friendly and helpful.

In a rural, quiet setting, three wooden huts, inserted into a flowery and fruity garden (serve freely), dominate the ocean (sunsets are just opposite). With a surface of 25 m ², they comfortably accommodate 2 adults (and 2 children). The bulk of the equipment is: air conditioning, private bathroom, Wi-Fi, kitchenette but no TV (deliberate choice) as well as a pool and barbecue in common. On request, a shopping cart is offered. Good address for hikers and nature lovers.

Located 5 minutes from the village, this spacious, spacious family house can accommodate up to 10 people (8 adults and 2 children) in a particularly restful setting. Very well equipped, you will even enjoy the swimming pool. Not far from there, the owner also rents a colourful, fully equipped cottage capable of accommodating up to 6 people. Owners are also producers of certified organic products. Quinta customers can purchase these organic products. An attractive quality/price ratio for both establishments.
