While holidays in the Maldives are expensive, there are a few activities that you can enjoy at no extra cost. Sunbathing on a sunbed with your eyes in the blue of the lagoon is the first of them. We also recommend that you buy fins, mask and snorkel so that you can splash around in the lagoon in search of reef sharks, rays and colourful fish. Few island hotels lend the equipment free of charge, and it costs about ten dollars (excluding taxes) per day to rent it.
By staying on an island-hotel, you will have little contact with the Maldivians. The resort employees have their own quarters on the island and it is there that they stay after their shift. Nevertheless, each island (local or private) has at least one football or volleyball field, where the men come to play at the end of the day.
Divers should be sure to pack a recent medical certificate of fitness to dive in English, as well as their PADI, SSI or other certification.
Group activities (diving, sunset cruises, angling, etc.) should be booked through the dive club or your hotel reception. Places are limited on the boats and some of the outings attract a lot of people, so it's best to book them when you arrive. It is also imperative to book your spa treatments, and to arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment time.
The island hotels live to the rhythm of the arrival and departure of international flights more than any local festival or celebration. However, the Ramadan period does impact life on the islands, especially locally. Business hours become more fluid, days are particularly quiet and restaurants and cafes may be closed.
The Maldives is a very safe country and there are no tourist traps or scams in particular.
