Shops are generally open from 8:30am to 10pm. They close on Fridays at prayer time between 11am and 2pm. On the island-hotels, the opening hours are about the same.
A VAT of 6% is applied to everyday consumer goods. It rises to 12% on tourist products. As of January1, 2022, an exit tax is attached to all airline tickets. The amount is US$30 per person travelling in economy class, US$60 per person travelling in business class, US$90 per person travelling in first class and US$120 per person travelling in private jet.
With the exception of tuna and coconut, the Maldives imports all of the common consumer goods. Therefore, it is not a business paradise.
There are only a few typical souvenirs of the country that you will want to put in your luggage. Collecting shells or sand is forbidden. However, you can get dried tuna to grate into salads or bendi, the coconut and palm sugar bars.
It is forbidden to import alcohol or religious insignia into the Maldives. Carry-on luggage is scanned on arrival at the airport.
