Very important festival for the Chinese of the island. Red dominates and firecrackers are set off. Dragon dances and various festivities.

This great festival, also called Spring Festival, is perhaps the only time when the Chinese stop working in Mauritius. On this day and the ones that follow, red, the symbolic colour of happiness, dominates. People gather with their families, explode firecrackers to ward off evil spirits, offer, display and share food to ensure abundance throughout the year... Festivities and shows take place in the Chinatown district of Port-Louis: dragon or lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, parades, etc.
