Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's largest city after Sao Paulo, is world-famous for its carnival, beaches and iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer. It was Brazil's capital until 1960. With over 6 million inhabitants within its walls and more than 12 million in the urban area, Rio de Janeiro is a major metropolis in South America. The city boasts many must-see tourist attractions, including Corcovado, Sugar Loaf, the historic center, Copacabana, the Botanical Gardens, Lapa, the Maracanã stadium and the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon. Rio de Janeiro also boasts strong economic potential, particularly in the metallurgy, chemicals, agri-food and oil sectors. In terms of education, the city boasts numerous elementary school, colleges and universities.
