Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Namibia
Timetable
The stores close at 6pm on weekdays and at 12pm on Saturdays: don't hang around, because here, the time is the time! On Sundays, everything is closed
Budget & Tips
Locally produced goods are very accessible, but imported goods are less so due to Namibia's isolation and small market size. All shops accept credit cards.
Sales
The sales periods are the same as in France: shortly after the end of year festivities, then in June. Black friday also applies in the country.
What's very local
To buy local, the best place to go is the Himba market on Independence Avenue (next to the Hillton Hotel). It will be an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the clothing customs of this Bantu people of the North-West. Another place, another atmosphere: the Green Market, on Uhland Street, and its more Germanic atmosphere, also offers local products: cosmetics made from local essences, woven baskets, bracelets, fabrics... Don't hesitate to negotiate with the Himba who are very hard to deal with. On the other hand, at the Green Market, the price is the price!
Tourist traps
Beware of counterfeits or products imported directly from China. The best thing to do is to ask the seller a little about the origin of the product, and to ask how it is made to have some guarantees.
