Practical information : Eating out Namibia
Timetable
Restaurants are generally open from Monday to Saturday, with some exceptions on Sunday lunchtime. It is best to make a reservation for dinner, regardless of the day of the week. Lunch, on the other hand, is a little quieter. Note that Namibians dine very early: it is not uncommon to sit at the table at 6:30 pm and most restaurants will not serve you after 8 pm, think about it!
Budget & Tips
The price/quality ratio is pretty good. The menus are often varied with rather European menus (pizzas, meat, fish, vegetarian dishes...). There is something for all tastes and you can often get by for about 200 NAD per person (drinks included), or less than 10 €. The quantities are often important so don't hesitate to ask for a doggy bag: the practice is very widespread and, even if you don't eat it, you can give it to a happy person in the street.
What costs extra
Unless you're really disappointed by the service, don't forget the 10% tip, it's the server's main income. In cities, you can also ask for tap water that is drinkable, even if it is not really the habit of the locals!
The local way
Put some ice cubes in his white wine glass! A real outrage for us French, but we must admit that under the Namibian sun, we end up accepting this custom and appreciate it.
Kids
In Namibia, children are kings and allowed everywhere! It is not uncommon to see them heckling and running barefoot between the tables without it seeming to bother anyone.
Smokers
Dedicated smoking areas are available in most restaurants.
