There are many sports opportunities in Cuba. From deep-sea fishing to scuba diving (coral reefs and wrecks in particular), from horseback riding to mountain hiking, whether on foot or by bicycle (three superb mountain ranges are to be discovered), there is something for everyone. Depending on the activity chosen, prices vary: 5/7 € for the rental of a bike or snorkeling equipment, 30/45 € for a diving trip, 300 € for a big game fishing trip... As for the hikes, it all depends on the length of the trip and the necessary logistics (with or without horse?).
The two national sports? Boxing and baseball! The second one (Cuba was 7th in the world in 2021) attracts a very enthusiastic public during matches between local teams. If you have the opportunity to attend a game, go for it, the atmosphere is incredible.
In another field, dominoes keep Cubans busy. It is usually played in the street, around a mesa a ocho patas: the table with eight legs! A reference to the legs of the four players sitting on stools that support the game table with their knees. Domino games can be very tense and attract many onlookers who crowd around the players, eagerly awaiting their turn to play
Salsa. As one of the world's centers of salsa, Cuba attracts dancers from all over the world every year to learn how to dance a la cubana, perfect their moves or simply have a good time on the dance floor! If you can find ten teachers in the blink of an eye while wandering around the capital or in the big cities, the best thing to do is to take lessons in a specialized center. Also, in Havana, we recommend the famous Casa del Son (Empedrado, 411 - between Compostela and Aguacate), which offers salsa packs and intensive percussion courses of several hours over one or several days. Less known but just as effective is the dance school En Cuba se baila asi (Tte Rey, 355 - between Bernaza and Cristo), run by the energetic Masiel (WhatsApp +53 5 2499298), who will be happy to teach you salsa, son, rumba, chachacha and bachata... Count 10 to 12 € per hour. Another option is the Zurdo y Yaremi school (Obispo, 456 - between Villegas and Aguacate - +53 5 3875836), which is just as friendly and professional. Once you are sure of yourself, all that remains is to launch yourself into the Cuban arena: head for our "Havana/going out" chapter!
It is possible that you will be asked for your diving license if you wish to discover the sea beds in Cuba. But most of the time, the instructors will trust you. After all, it's your life, not theirs!
For diving, deep-sea fishing or hiking in the mountains, it is best to book your activity at least the day before. Agree on the service, the schedule and the rates to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Runners will be able to participate in the Marabana Marathon, which is held in Havana every year in November. Maximum time allowed: 5 hours. The half-marathon can be done in 3 hours. There is also the Mini Marathon for Peace (4 219 m)!
