Read moreIf you don't have a car or don't want to venture up the twists and turns of the Transfăgărașan, you can opt for the Balea bus. The Carpathian Travel Center charters a comfortable minibus three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) from July to early October, taking you from Sibiu to the Balea waterfall, or to the lake of the same name at 2,037 m altitude. You leave at 9 a.m. and return in the evening. The lake is the starting point for some spectacular hikes. Some can be done during the day.
