Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, is a diving destination that offers a unique experience. The city, once torn apart by civil war, has been largely rebuilt and now boasts a modern infrastructure. Although the marine life is not exceptional, there are many interesting dive sites to discover. Wrecks are a highlight of diving in Beirut, with sites such as the French submarine "Souffleur" and the cargo ship "Macedonia". Reef dives offer the chance to observe rays, groupers and nudibranchs. There are some 25 diving centers along the Lebanese coast, including 4 in Beirut. The National Institute for Scuba Diving (NISD) is a renowned center, offering courses and boat trips from the marina harbor of the Melia Riviera hotel. Dives are supervised by experienced guides with a strong emphasis on safety.
