This is the Ladies' Market, the oldest (over one hundred and forty years old), the most important and the most lively in Sofia, located on Stambolov between Slivnitza Boulevard and Ekzarh-Yossif Street. It is a profusion of seasonal fruits and vegetables, spices and sweets, some butchery, some fish, dairy products and flowers. Some food pottery too. A real show. Take advantage of this opportunity to shop for fresh products at very low prices.

Built between 1909 and 1911, the big market of Sofia is a model of national Romantic architecture. This magnificent hall, which evokes the one in Prague with its metal structure, was a very lively market. In recent years it has become an empty shell, deserted and rather sad. The stands are closing one after the other. The potential of this magnificent building is undeniable, but awaiting a rehabilitation project.

This central square is one of the places most frequented by the inhabitants of Sofia. There are a number of shops, as well as the famous book market where books in different languages are sold at very attractive prices. Don't hesitate to buy one in Cyrillic as a souvenir of your visit to a Slavic country. At the corner of the square is a monument to the two great writers Petko Slaveykov and his son Pentcho Slaveykov, after whom the square is named.
