This day commemorates April 9, 1989 (also known as the Tbilisi tragedy). During a peaceful anti-Soviet student demonstration on Tbilisi's Roustaveli Avenue, the Russian army went on a rampage, killing twenty people and wounding hundreds more. From then on, the movement became much more radical. The same day also marks the restoration of Georgia's independence, voted on April 9, 1991? by its separation from the USSR.
