MARCHÉ COUVERT

Covered market and market hall

This square was already the site of a market under the Bernese (1536-1798), but it was not until the 19th century that this hall was covered with wood and metal in a fashionable industrial style. It was a gift from Henri Nestlé that made its construction possible, and its plans are the work of a town architect, Henri Chaudet. Its metal structure, reminiscent of that of the Halles de Paris, was made in the foundry where Gustave Eiffel ordered the materials for his famous tower. Today, the place hosts various events every year.
