Practical information : Take a break Rwanda
Timetable
It's not uncommon for bars to offer happy hour from 4pm to 8pm for workers'afterwork. These convivial moments can last until 11pm or 1am on weekdays, and until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, depending on the atmosphere and the crowds. In Kigali, brunch has become a common practice at weekends, as Rwandans (among the urban middle class) like to get together with friends for an "early breakfast", whether in certain restaurants (The Hut, Heaven, Kivu Noir, Casa Keza, Choma'd, Boho...) or in coffee shops.
Budget & Tips
The price of draught beer varies from Frw 1,500 (local) to Frw 3,000 (imported).
Age restrictions
The legal age for buying and consuming alcohol is 18. The authorities have also strengthened the fight against drinking and driving. The multiplication of controls and breathalyzer tests have pushed the establishments to adapt. Prudent drivers" offer to drive customers home from bars and restaurants. This service has been set up by many owners.
What's very local
In the evening, many Rwandans meet in open-air bars (Rwandan, Congolese, Kenyan...) and enjoy goat kebabs on the go, accompanied by the inevitable Primus, Amstel or Skol. In Kigali,car-free zones have been created in Remera, Nyamirambo, Biryogo... A string of kiosks and street bars follow one another, with their more or less improvised terraces. You can eat there for cheap, and the walk is worth the detour, if only to soak up the local atmosphere; a beer here, a skewer there, and you start again from one end of the street to the other.
