Practical information : Going out Rwanda
Timetable
The nightlife in Kigali is very lively: between bars, restaurants and discos, there's plenty to keep you entertained. However, since 2023, nights have been quieter, with a night-time curfew imposed for the capital's bars and nightclubs (1h on weekdays, 2h at weekends). The aim is to combat noise pollution and excessive alcohol consumption.
Two districts act as beacons for night owls: the popular Nyamirambo and Remera, and the more select Kimihurura. Outside the capital, the evenings are much quieter, with the exception of Rubavu/Gisenyi, a town on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which attracts Goma residents, especially at weekends. Here, a number of well-known venues on the shores of Lake Kivu delight night owls (Chez West, Amaliza, New Tam Tam, Saga Bay...).
Night transport
The sobriety of cab and motorcycle drivers is exemplary. It's best to rely on them when leaving a bar, a restaurant or a discotheque, especially as Rwanda has a strict policy on drinking and driving. In Kigali, some establishments even hire drivers to take customers home in their own cars.
Age restrictions
The legal age for buying and consuming alcohol is 18. The authorities have also stepped up the fight against drink-driving in 2019. Drunk driving (three glasses of beer are enough) can result in up to a week's imprisonment and a US$170 fine.
What's very local
No dress code worries when going out, but a minimum of common sense is required. People in Rwanda are very stylish, especially in Kigali! You don't wait for the weekend to put on your best outfit. The appearance of clothing is essential, and in a country where it is important, fashion is booming. The 100% made in Rwanda creation is also on the rise, with quality clothes with local colors.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in public places. In restaurants, bars, discotheques, smoking areas are provided. Generally it is outside that it happens. But you will see very few Rwandans smoking, it may even be frowned upon in some circles, it is not at all "cultural" in Rwanda.
