It was built in 1863 by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans (PO). It is a passenger station of the TER Nouvelle-Aquitaine network, served by regional express trains. 45 minutes are needed between Le Buisson and Périgueux with two stops, one at Le Bugue, the other at Eyzies-de-Tayac Sireuil. It takes 30 minutes between Sarlat and Le Buisson.

The railway line runs along the Dordogne valley, past some of the area's finest châteaux, including Castelnaud, Beynac and Les Milandes. A gastronomic train once ran between Bergerac and Sarlat, allowing passengers to enjoy the 69 km journey while admiring the scenery and savoring the local gastronomy. At present, the journey between Sarlat and Bordeaux takes around 2 hours 30 minutes, and there are 6 trains a day.
