This early July, Airlines for Europe (A4E) announces a harmonization of free cabin baggage size. Mind you, it's not your suitcase that's concerned, but the small bag (backpack, handbag or other) you put under your seat. The new size under which this baggage will be free: 40 x 30 x 15 cm. These new dimensions should be implemented "by the end of the 2025 summer season", according to an A4E press release.
One thing to note, however: the format adopted by the companies will be far from standard. Indeed, airlines will be able to "continue to authorize larger personal baggage, at their discretion".
Here are a few examples:
- Ryanair has announced that its free cabin baggage size will be increased to 40 x 30 x 20 cm (i.e. 24 liters).
- Air France already allows free baggage up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm.
- Lufthansa, on the other hand, allowed baggage up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm.
The aim of this move? To harmonize practices between airlines. Airlines for Europe explains that"the standardization of hand baggage dimensions has been on the Brussels agenda for years". The aim is to save passengers from hidden charges.
