Flight to Lalibela on Ethiopian Airlines, 700 km north of Addis Ababa. Visit Lalibela's magnificent rock-hewn churches, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This complex of eleven monolithic and semi-monolithic structures was carved directly into the stone of the mountainside at least 800 years ago. The complex houses the world's largest monolithic church, a labyrinth of passages and tunnels, intricately carved reliefs and fabulous examples of icon painting.

For the morning, we have two choices: Take a morning hike with mules to Mount Asheton, with its 13th-century monastery carved into the rock and stunning views over the town; - OR - Drive to Yemrehanna Kristos, a beautiful church set in a shallow cave that predates the churches of Lalibela. The drive to Yemrehanna will also give you the opportunity to see the countryside and villages of the Ethiopian highlands. If you choose either of the above options, you'll continue your visit to the churches of Lalibela in the afternoon.
