Detail of the stay : Akagera Park, the African savannah... - 3 days

  • Kigali
  • Parc National De L’akagera
  • Parc National De L’akagera
  • Parc National De L’akagera

Day 1: Direction Akagera Park

Steps: Kigali, Parc National De L'Akagera

Departure around 9:00 am from Kigali. Arrival in the park around 11:30 am, lunch at Akagera Game Lodge. Afternoon at leisure with a boat trip on Lake Ihema. Akagera National Park is the largest protected wetland in Central Africa. Covering up to about a third of the park, the interconnected lakes and papyrus swamps cover a vast area. Akagera's wetlands make it unique and set it apart from other parks in the region. Take a trip to Lake Ihema and watch hippos disturbing their day's sleep, crocodiles basking in the sun and gliding across the lake as the boat approaches. For birdwatchers and enthusiasts alike, the boat trip is a must, with a huge variety of birds to see. Lake Ihema and its island, Nyirabiyoro, both have an interesting history. Hear the popular Rwandan story of a wealthy outcast who fled to Nyirabiyoro Island and how Henry Morton Stanley, the first Western explorer to visit Akagera in 1876, is responsible for the lake's name... Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 2: All-day safari

Steps: Parc National De L'Akagera

For the adventurous, there's the possibility of a one-hour hot-air balloon ride in the south of the park at 5.30 a.m...

Visit Akagera Park at around 7 a.m. to admire the flora and fauna at their most awakening. This 1085km² wilderness reserve is made up of grassy savannahs and wooded massifs, marshes and lakes. The park's avifauna includes over 540 species of birds, both resident and migratory, including the famous hoofbeak. Lunch at Akagera Game Lodge, then relax at the Lodge in the afternoon or go on safari as you wish. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 3: Crossing the park from south to north

Steps: Parc National De L'Akagera

Last day of safari and last chance to observe wildlife...In a bid to reduce friction between the local community and wildlife, a 120 km predator-proof solar fence has been erected. In 2015, lions were reintroduced and within 2 years the population had tripled. In 2017, two male lions were introduced to increase genetic diversity, and in the same year, 18 eastern black rhinos were reintroduced. The project has been so successful that in 2019, as part of the largest relocation of rhinos from Europe to Africa, five zoo-born black rhinos now live in Akagera...In November 2021, 30 white rhinoceroses from South Africa were reintroduced, and are now the most common sightings, as the black rhinoceroses are much more shy... If you're lucky, you may see a rhinoceros and a lion on this last day of the safari... Return to Kigali in the evening.
