Stay : A week of skiing around Vancouver

Chosen by the Olympic Committee to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver is the perfect base for a ski trip. Whistler, one and a half hours north of the city, is known as one of the most popular winter sports resorts in North America, but there are also smaller resorts in the immediate vicinity of the city that provide variety.

Day 1: Quick tour of Vancouver

Steps: Vancouver

Head to Waterfront Station, the terminal of the Skytrain lines in the city centre. From here, you can reach the tourism nerve centre in Vancouver with the Canada Place Convention Center, the departure of the city's bus tours, the walkway along the marina and the historic Gastown neighbourhood. Those who do not have time to visit Stanley Park on foot can follow the bicycle path of Seawall along the waterfront by bicycle or on roller skates. You can picnic in the park at the foot of the aboriginal totems before heading to Vancouver Lookout, a panoramic tower with a stunning view of the buildings of the city centre, the surrounding mountains and the Pacific Ocean. In case of a rainy day, take a shelter at the Art Gallery or the Bill Reid Gallery, two art museums that highlight Amerindian culture and crafts. A dinner in a pub or a restaurant in the trendy Yaletown district will beautifully end your day! For an unusual evening and unexpected encounters, take a look at the Cambie Bar.

Day 2: Grouse Mountain

Steps: Grouse Mountain

The closest ski resort to the city centre, just half an hour drive from public transport. It offers splendid views over the surroundings, in addition to a perfectly correct restaurant even if its price is slightly overvalued.

Day 3: Mount Seymour

Steps: Vancouver, Mount Seymour Provincial Park

Twenty kilometres north-east of Vancouver, this small resort is shunned by tourists but very popular among the local population. It also enjoys beautiful views of the city and the surrounding areas, and offers accommodation options if you wish to extend your stay. Great opportunities for snowshoeing and other winter activities.

Day 4: Cypress Mountain

Steps: Vancouver, Cypress Provincial Park

The trendy destination for Vancouverites' weekends. If the panoramas offered by the resorts mentioned above are beautiful, those you will find at Cypress Mountain are considerably higher! The trails seem to drop straight down in the Pacific Ocean. It's also a resort with facilities close to those of Whistler, and ample accommodation oppportunities. The resort is located north of Vancouver, towards Whistler.

Day 5: On the trails of Whistler

Steps: Vancouver

From Cypress Mountain, you can continue your way to Whislter and thus discover Canada's first winter-sports resort. Its relative remoteness with Vancouver obliges you to spend at least one night, but that's just as well, since exploring the Whistler area and its neighbour Blackcomb will take you several days. It's even possible to easily spend one week there before being tired of the tracks.

Day 6: Between Whistler and Blackcomb

In recent years, a state-of-the-art cable car has been linking the two resorts, making both areas easily accessible. Of course, many accommodation options are available for you, and the two villages offer entertainment that has nothing to envy of the resorts of the Alps.

Day 7: Last day on the tracks

Steps: Vancouver

Enjoy for one last time the Whistler slopes, before returning to Vancouver to take your return flight.
