Day 1: Arrival in Zagreb
Rent a car for the next morning. In Zagreb's main square (Trg bana Jelačića), go to the tourist office to ask for maps and detailed discovery/itinerary booklets (Zagreb and surrounding area), and ask about accommodation options. Spot the only skyscraper in the center, and climb to the top floor for a 360-degree view of the old and modern city and beyond. Then stroll through the historic districts of Kaptol and Gradec (green promenades, museums, churches, Baroque palaces, medieval streets). Dinner in one of the city's restaurants.
Day 2: Direction Krapina
Steps: Krapina, Pregrada, Marija Bistrica
Don't miss the Church of St. Mary of Jerusalem (1750) in the Baroque town of Krapina, an important pilgrimage site in Zagorje. Visit the romantic castle of Trakoscan and the villages of Pregrada, Vinagora, Marija Bistrica and Mijana castle.
Day 3: Day trip to Varaždin
Steps: Varaždin
Varaždin, its rich heritage of baroque architecture and sculpture, beautifully restored. Attend an early music concert in the cathedral or in one of its beautiful palaces. Ask at the tourist office.
Day 4: Veliki Tabor hill
The silhouette of the imposing Veliki Tabor castle is already visible. A must-see! On the way back to Zagreb, a detour to the village-museum of Kumrovec and the lower town of Klanjec. Arrive in Zagreb at the end of the day.
