SUMMER PAVILION OF HVĚZDA

Art gallery exhibition space foundation and cultural center

Originally part of the Benedictine convent of Břevnov, the residence of Hvězda (Šternberský palác) is located very close to the religious building, in the area of the former hunting reserve created in 1534 in the Malejov forest. It can be reached by a long, very long, straight path that pierces the forest. The paths are very popular with the residents of the surrounding neighbourhoods: walking, mushroom picking, running: weekends are very lively! At the end of the 18th century, the forest was transformed into an English-style park. The pavilion itself, in Renaissance style, was built in the years 1555-1556. Transformed into a powder magazine under Joseph II, restored in 1949, it now exhibits the works of the writer Alois Jirasek and the painter Mikolas Aleš. It is a strange building, stocky, white, which evokes a little bit of a flower that blooms. It is embellished with white and red shutters. It also presents a gigantic historical and panoramic reconstruction of the Battle of the White Mountain, which will delight lovers of modern history. It is indeed in the extreme southwest of the reserve that the last phase of this battle took place, in the context of the Thirty Years' War, which opposed the armies of the Czech, Moravian and Silesian states, to that of Ferdinand II. A monument commemorates this event. Next to it (at the terminus of tram 22), the Baroque church of Our Lady Victory was built in the 18th century to celebrate the Habsburg triumph.

VÍTKOV NATIONAL MEMORIAL

Memorial to visit

Memorial (Národní památník na Vítkově) commemorating the Hussite wars, and in particular the Battle of Vikov in 1420. 9 m high equestrian statue of the Hussite war commander Jan Žižka has dominated the site since 1950. Considered the highest equestrian statue in the world, it is visible from almost every other part of the city.

Behind it, a huge granite building, built in 1930, housed the Communist Party mausoleum. Inside were preserved the "sarcophagus" of Clement Gottwald and the tombs of other great names of communism. But all the vaults are empty now. After 1989, the bodies were burned and the funeral urns handed over to the families. The greatest mystery surrounds Gottwald's mystery that the family did not want to accept. It must be said that Gottwald had been exposed, mummified in his stone sarcophagus as it was customary to do in the East (Lenin's mausoleum in Moscow, Dimitroff's in Sofia). To carry out this mummification, and to maintain it, cold rooms were built in the basement of the mausoleum where the thanatopractors worked tirelessly... The Gottwald case was particularly difficult because, because of its alcoholism, mummification turned into a disaster. In desperation, the party called on the Barrandov film studios, which rebuilt Gottwald out of plastic using the mummified remains of his remains, which were cremated in 1962... All this was a bit morbid.

CONVENT OF ST. AGNES (ANEŽKY KLÁŠTER)

Abbey monastery and convent

To the east of Josefov, the district around the convent of St. Agnes offers a calm and serene atmosphere and almost village street scenes. We are far from the proud high buildings of the western part of the district. Here, the houses are low and the narrow cobbled streets are sometimes narrow. The cloister is one of the oldest Gothic buildings to have survived previous centuries. It was Anežka Přemyslovna, the sister of King Wenceslas I who became a member of the Order of St Francis of Assisi, who asked for the foundation of this convent of the Poor Clares. Its construction began in 1234, but was not completed until decades later. In 1782, the convent suffered the same fate as many others in Bohemia: it had to close following a decree by Joseph II. The premises of the convents were then converted into warehouses. Since the creation of Czechoslovakia, the convent has housed the collection The Medieval Art of Bohemia and Central Europe (1200-1550). The sobriety of the church and the 14th century Gothic vaults highlight their beauty. It includes works by the master theorist who decorated Karlštejn Castle with his paintings on wood, as well as Slovak, German and Austrian works. Allow at least an hour to fully enjoy not only the collection, but also this architecture that no longer has many competitors in Europe. The concerts are given in the hall next to the church in a purely magnificent Gothic setting.

One of the city's most beautiful houses, from Kutná Hora's glory days in the 15th century. Inside, there's a small exhibition dedicated to silver mining, of which there are many around the town, and to regional craftsmanship.

After construction, drinking water was transported to the town center and stored in the reservoir.

The major attractions of the region lies in the park of Průhonice, attached to the village of the same name. There are various kinds of them so that bloom extends more possible for a long time and that all colours are there. The castle is only open for events and exhibitions.

RUE DES MOVES (NA PŘÍKOPĚ)

Street square and neighborhood to visit

This shopping street leads from Wenceslas Square to the Powder Tower. Today, it is an alignment of rather mid- to high-end fashion boutiques. All along the way there are many passages, also dedicated to leisure and consumerism (a large cinema and restaurants in the Slovansky Dům). On the way, if you are not captivated by window shopping, you will appreciate to detail the facades of some notable houses. At number 12, start by pushing the door of the Moser crystal works into the sumptuous interior. Take a look outside at the Baroque palace Silva-Taroucca. Signed K.-I. Dientzenhofer, it offers a very elegant facade that opens onto a passage. Further on, two buildings frame the breakthrough of Nekazanka Street and deserve to be stopped. The one on the right, Na Příkopě 18, has beautiful mosaics. They are by Jan Preisler, one of the very first to have integrated Art Nouveau into his painting. The one on the left, Na Příkopě 20, is designed by the same architect, Osvald Polivka, one of the greatest names of this period. Both buildings were built to accommodate the city's brand new banks, born of the wealth brought by the industrial boom. Many artists of the time, including Aleš and Sucharda, worked on the decoration of the facade. At number 20, the stairs will leave you speechless. Max Švabinský's allegorical paintings decorate the hall, the first floor room is topped by a magnificent glass roof.

The city is closely connected with the famous Czech automobile brand. It all began in 1895, when two Czech automotive pioneers, Václav Laurin, a mechanic, and Václav Klement, a bookseller, manufactured the Slavia bicycle. Today, the factory is a large complex with the most modern production halls in the world. In this colossal museum you will discover the history of this company, which will please the nostalgic of the great era! The exhibition presents all or almost all Škoda models, since the creation of the company, in chronological order. In the first part you will discover elegant vans, the first models of Škoda Octavia or the fantastic Škoda Sport Montecarlo of 1936. There are also some trucks and rarer models. As the brand has become more well-known and popular in France in recent years, those of you who own a Škoda will be delighted to visit the second part of the exhibition, which includes all the models on three exhibition floors. CASTLE OF KŘIVOKLÁT (HRAD)

Monuments to visit

This fairy-tale castle, located about thirty kilometers from Karlštejn (between Beroun and Rakovník), is situated in the Křivoklát forest, which it dominates from its spur. It was founded in 1230 on the site of a fort mentioned in texts from 1110. This makes it one of the oldest castles in the country. It was damaged in 1422 and rebuilt between 1493 and 1522. It quickly became an important administrative center, then a royal castle and summer residence of the sovereigns Charles IV and his son Wenceslas IV. Abandoned at the end of the Middle Ages, it was used for a time as a prison (16th century). It underwent many fires (1597, 1643, 1826) which required several successive renovations (1882, 1938), the last one, important, in 1945. During its history, it passed through the hands of several families: Schwarzenberg, Valdštejn, Fürstenberk (their portraits are visible in all the rooms of the castle). It has remained very authentic. Worth seeing: medieval paintings, weapons, a collection of sledges and, among other things, a library with over 50,000 books. The Gothic interior of the chapel is exceptional, as is the 25-meter long Gothic great hall. The castle was also one of the filming locations for the series The Borgias. The fact that it is located in a protected natural area adds greatly to its charm: it sits surrounded by green forests, without a single building to spoil the view.

NELAHOZEVES CASTLE AND COLLECTIONS (ZÁMEK)

Monuments to visit

This square yet "light" castle was built by Florian Gryspek of Griesbach between 1553 and 1558. It is one of the first Renaissance buildings in the country. During the Thirty Years' War, it was occupied and the interior was modified, but the Renaissance style remained. Since then, it has never been transformed and is therefore offered to us almost intact. The Arcades room, the dining room and its glassware or the Knights' room with its 16th century sandstone fireplace and its decorated ceiling are particularly appreciated. In the 1990s, Nelahozeves was returned to the Lobkowicz family of Roudnice (owner since 1623), who exhibited a large number of paintings from their personal collection. The place became one of the most important private museums in Europe. Thousands of works from the Renaissance to the 1930s were collected by this family and are partly on display to the public.

We will see the famous painting by Bruegel, The Harvest. But also Veronese, Rubens, Velazquez, Bellotto, to name a few. The collection of 17th century Spanish portraits is the most important outside Spain. Also on display are sacred objects (including a 16th-century altarpiece), ceramics, manuscripts, furniture, weapons and photographs. In the music room, old instruments, original scores, Beethoven's manuscripts and other evidence of this family's interest in composers are on display.
