On the Isle of Spike, Wapping Wharf brings together some of the best of what Bristol has to offer at the moment, and perfectly sums up the current spirit of the city. There are a number of excellent small independent restaurants, bars and cafés, as well as delicatessen, beer, wine and cider stores. All of this is housed in old containers that recall the city's maritime past and are part of the district's history. There's no shortage of choice, and this is one of Bristol's must-visit culinary spots.

ST NICHOLAS MARKET

Open since 1743, this delightful, friendly market is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat at lunchtime in central Bristol. Popular with locals and visitors alike, there are numerous stalls featuring cuisines from all over the world at low prices, under the arcades of the Georgian building. It's best to take some food to go, but it's possible to stay on site if you can find a table. If almost anything appeals, Pieminister is a classic and Eat a Pitta is also a tasty option.
