As an indigenous and aboriginal people, the Sami have a different status from other ethnic minorities in Sweden. In 1977, the Riksdag (the Swedish Parliament) recognized the Sami as an indigenous people, which led to some empowerment and the establishment of a Sami Parliament. On the Sami Parliament's website, you can find a lot of information about the history of the Sami people, their culture, their handicrafts, but also their legal status and their quest for independence and autonomy within Sweden. A real mine of information!
