JOHANNESBURG INTERNATIONAL O.R. TAMBO

Airport and passenger services
3/5
3 reviews

Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport, built in 1952, has been refurbished and expanded to welcome tourists in 2010 for the World Cup. Every day, many national and international flights take off and land there. There are vending machines and a Vodacom shop: buy a phone chip with rechargeable Internet credit when you arrive if you want to use the GPS on your phone with a South African chip, which is economical and very practical.

COETZEE PRETORIA SHUTTLE

Airline and services

Few taxis are looking for the customer from the exit. Most are licensed drivers, but there is also "the informal", not necessarily dangerous, certainly ruinous. Agree to follow a driver only after establishing a fixed price. Here, we walk to the package, between 300 and 450 R to go to town, which is more expensive than renting a car for the day!

GAUTRAIN

Airport shuttle

For those who prefer local transport to the unmissable Uber, set up for the 2010 World Cup, the Gautrain is comparable to the Parisian metro, only slightly more expensive. Ideal for getting to Johannesburg or Pretoria from the airport, nine stops are possible. Pretoria residents working in Johannesburg use it on a daily basis. It is a very safe, well-travelled, spacious, quiet and fast means of transport. It takes only about 12 minutes to reach downtown Johannesburg.

METROBUS OF JOHANNESBURG

Public transport buses and coaches

The Metrobus of Johannesburg is the city's public transport system. Don't expect the French-style city bus service! Schedules are not always respected and cleanliness often leaves something to be desired, but at least it's really very cheap! Stops in front of Rosebank mall, Cresta or Ghandi square. Be sure to ask the driver for the direction of the bus before taking the road! To avoid, perhaps, if you have an appointment to keep or if you have a plane to catch.

KULULA AIRLINES

Airlines €€

With its flashy green planes, it is the South African airline, Air France's preferred partner since October 2014, Kulula Airlines connects Cape Town daily with Durban, Johannesburg, but also the smaller cities of Lanseria, George, Port Elizabeth and East London. It will sometimes be easier, or even unavoidable in some cases to fly some routes internally, as the flagship cities are sometimes too far away. On its website, you can create your own package with flight, car rental and hotel.

ROVOS RAIL

Railway company

This luxury train company, which departs from Pretoria, serves all of southern Africa as far as Victoria Falls. Beautiful old-fashioned locomotive, romantic atmosphere and refined cuisine. From Pretoria, there are only two national routes. The route from Pretoria to Cape Town includes a visit to Matjiesfontein and the Big Hole tour in Kimberley, for history and diamond lovers. Once again, far from the classic train, Rovos Rail is talking about a real hotel travelling through the South African landscape.

BLUE TRAIN

Railway company

The Blue Train is an experience in itself. The luxury train company operates two routes: Pretoria-Cape Town and Pretoria-Kruger Park. The Blue Train is resolutely more modern than the others, with its comfort and design, a far cry from the steam-powered "tchoutchous". It's like a 5-star hotel on wheels, threading its way across plains, weaving between mountain ranges, ploughing through arid landscapes and slowing down to meet the wildlife along the way. It's still a long way from the dream of Cairo, but the foundations have been laid in South Africa.
