We come here a little by chance, when we try to avoid the rabble-rousers and the touristic affluence of the old town. This establishment on Akti Tombazi, next to the former Grand Arsenal, is easily spotted by its wooden tables, spread out along the flagstone path that runs alongside the sea to the Koum Kapi district. The best fish restaurant in the village at moderate prices and with a view. On a large and very pleasant terrace right on the waterfront, you can choose fish and local specialities in the window. Everything is very good, the dishes are generous, the service is a little slow but really friendly, the French speaking waiter takes the time to detail each dish. This allows you to contemplate the boats and the crystal clear turquoise water while having a very good time. In addition to fish, seafood and a variety of other dishes are served.

There is a succulent tavern inland in the village of Vafes, which can be reached via tiny winding country roads. But it's worth the effort! Here time stands still and you feel like you're deep in Crete. You will eat in the quiet stone courtyard of a recently restored old monastery. This is the restaurant of the Caravella Hotel. It is a fish and mezze restaurant, which overlooks the sea from its blue and white front. Two brothers are the owners of the place and they are the ones who fish with their boat off Paleohora, a family tradition (as shown by the family photos in the back room). You can choose your own fish in the kitchen among other dishes, including vegetarian ones. Ask for the price per kilo in order to avoid a bad surprise at the time of the bill: fresh fish is always more expensive!

In the shade of centuries-old plane trees, this tavern in the village of Spilia offers typical Cretan cuisine, succulent, prepared with quality ingredients. Sometimes crowded during big celebrations or weddings, it will be an opportunity to get in touch with local life. The Amphora restaurant has been in the harbour for about years, and it is the only one here that does not need rabatteurs. Its main quality in addition to the direct view of the port is the dishes cooked according to the ancient Cretan tradition. There's also fresh fish in everyday life, but today we've decided to taste the lemon stamnagathi lamb. The stamnagathi is a wild plant that grows on the rocks near the sea, only in Crete. It's a little dish available in the menus of other restaurants. In the plate, it looks like spinach, but the taste is different. Their famous recipe for fish soup is still kept secret; We only know that it's a broth of different fish that kaminraum with celery, olive oil and lemon. Dessert is available to all clients: it is a small glass of Greek yogurt teeming with candied grapes. A real treat and servers have lots of stories to share. This is the tavern of the Vamos association, dating from 1905! In the main room of the building was a cistern, still used today to keep drinks cool! Here you can taste local specialities cooked over a wood fire: stews, coq au vin with homemade pasta, snails, cuttlefish in tomato and fennel sauce. A wide variety of local cheeses and wines are also available. Very frequented by artists, the atmosphere becomes easily festive... Concerts are organized there some summer evenings.

The owner of this mezzedopoleio, originally from Macedonia ("perperas" means butterfly in Northern Greece), having succumbed to the charms of Crete, has been in Hania for some time and shares his love of cooking with his customers. Large, cool terrace under the vines. The owners' sons also rent out a number of well-equipped rooms and studios with private, shaded inner courtyard terraces. Simple and unpretentious, air-conditioned, they overlook the beach. They are practical, clean and comfortable.

Very good traditional tavern located on the road leading to the beach of Sougia, a few minutes walk from the sea. Nice terrace shaded by vines and trees, on two levels, well laid out, very pleasant. One comes here for its Cretan dishes at small prices. The speciality: wild goat dishes. Consult the menu for the dishes of the day, well prepared. Good value for money. We come back to it! The menu of this "fusion" restaurant, which finds its inspiration in Mexico and Crete, includes revisited dishes, carefully prepared by the renowned chef D. Malandrekis according to traditional Mexican practices. The restaurant opened its doors in 2021 with the ambition of creating a unique place in Hania, and it has already become one of the best restaurants in the city. You can enjoy, among other things, delicious tacos or meats cooked with barbacoa in a banana leaf. The Margarita cocktail is really worth trying!

Petros Place is a traditional tavern that offers a very varied and good quality menu. The establishment is mostly frequented for its juicy grilled meats as well as for the gyros, the famous Greek sandwich that is a hit with the customers. The portions are copious, the staff is friendly and the service efficient... On the menu, several home-made dishes, burgers, pastas, fried calamari and shrimps, mixed salads and some stewed dishes, among others. To eat in or take away. Good quality-price ratio.

A tavern, the oldest in Frangokastello, set on the water's edge: the sea and the beach are the backdrop. The place is ideal for admiring, from the terrace, the magnificent sunsets. The menu is varied, you can find a bit of everything. Crowded in July and August, the place is highly touristic because there is not much choice around the famous castle. You can also stay in the rooms and studios for rent which have been tastefully renovated.
