Say "bratche"! A short distance from Split, the island's main port is Supetar, a good base for a holiday in the Adriatic Sea Located around a horseshoe-shaped bay, Supetar enchants with its simple lifestyle. When we get off Split, it's resting! Connected to the big city by a direct car ferry line, Supetar is the ideal destination for those who want to fully enjoy the possibilities of the continent (Central Dalmatia) while enjoying the charms of a small island town, where everything is nearby: cafés-restaurants, shops, banks, post office, tourist agency, market, library, medical services, sports activities without forgetting the beach, the port... In addition, the programme of summer festivities is dense: free concerts, plays, folk evenings, carnivals are organised as part of the municipality's cultural summer.

This ancient Roman city, which has become an administrative centre, has succeeded in developing a rational seaside resort agrotourism while preserving itself from anarchic constructions. For shops, the tourist office, the library but also the medical office, the bus station or the marina, you can do everything on foot. Quiet! Quiet! Summer is something else. Many tourists, especially those who have taken the ferry with their vehicles, get off the pier and rush to Bol in the south of the island, which will find the best place on the photogenic beach of Zlatni Rat. This very suggestively shaped point of land, which penetrates the turquoise sea, remains one of the most popular swimming spots in Croatia, a very attractive cliché.

Lazing around the port with the locals

Let's go back to Supetar, on the north coast of the island! For the day, the easiest way is to do as the islanders do, let the hours go by around the port. On the nearby beaches, on the equipped pontoons, you can settle in, picnic and relax without any complexes. As soon as the weather is fine, you can swim in shallow water. At the end of the afternoon, you will have to pass through the promenade de la mer, taken in both directions with an optional visit to the gallery of the sculptor Ivan Rendić. All this is interspersed with relaxation sessions on the terraces of coffee shops and restaurants. If most visitors return to Split with the last ferries in the evening, staying on the island and enjoying the peace and quiet of Supetar is a smart option!

Gourmet and cultural walks

The island has many hiking and cycling trails. Some start and end in Supetar. The well named Dolcevita Trail starts near the restaurant Agroturizam Ranjak. Marked by other taverns (konobas), the path is similar to a small country walk, which winds its way to Donji Humac. This village is known for its culinary speciality which can surprise. It is the grilled vitalac, an old-fashioned recipe made of giblets wrapped in a strainer and turned on a spit. The lamb meat, fed on mother's milk, exhales aromatic scents, those of sage, fennel and rosemary that the sheep graze in the middle of the rock garden. The same gustatory subtlety in cheese, pastries or local alcohols. Another interest of the village is the family art gallery Jakšić. Here, sculptors from father to son since 1903 have been passing on the art of stone carving

Hiking, cycling or climbing and swimming stops

With the maps of the territory, available at the Tourist Office, we can better measure the distances on the island (40 km long by 15 wide), locate the most beautiful coves, diving or surfing spots, locate climbing sites or the route of your trek. To "do" the Blaca Desert (Pustinja Blaca), leave early in the morning, especially in summer, when the heat rises quickly to the barometer! You will visit the troglodyte monastery, carved in the 16th century in limestone rock, the one that made Brač famous for its history and was used to build, among others, the Diocletian Palace and the American White House! The current stonemasonry school is located at Pučišća, a small, well-protected port on the northeast coast of the island

Any other ideas for excursions from Supetar? Head west to Ložišća, a picturesque village with its baroque church with its proud bell tower, to Milna, the old fishing port that looks towards the island of Solta. Further south, after the coves, a visit to Murvica is necessary to discover the Dragon's Cave, with walls covered with rock paintings dating from the 15th century. To the east, visit the Škrip Ecomuseum, the Franciscan monastery in Dol and drive to Splitska, another pleasant coastal town near the bay of Lovrečina

A last but not least hike begins at the foot of Vidova Gora, the highest peak in the Adriatic islands, which rises to 778 m. For viewers, this summit offers a 360° view of the natural landscapes of Brač, the archipelago around, the coast offshore
