PTUJ CASTLE (GRAD PTUJ)

Castles to visit
4.3/5
4 reviews

The oldest part of this extensive castle dates from the 10th or 11th century, in particular the west tower. Owned by the bishops of Salzburg at the end of the 11th century, the building passed to the lords of Pettau (Ptuj) in 1132, who ruled for three centuries until the death of the last descendant, Friedrich IX, in 1438. The complex underwent major transformations. Among the many occupants were the Scottish Leslie family, who bought the castle from the destitute Jesuits from 1656 to 1802, and the von Herberstein family, who owned it privately for the last time from 1873 to 1945, acquiring it at auction.

The entrance portal, named the Peruzzi portal after the architect who renovated the castle until 1572, is surmounted by an attic featuring lions framing the Leslie family coat of arms, three belt buckles. The courtyard is bordered by fine arcades on three levels, with pillars on the first floor and Tuscan columns on the upper floors. Friedrich IX's Salzburg red marble tombstone is one of the most famous of the Gothic period.

The museum boasts a remarkable collection of 18th- and 19th-century musical instruments on the first floor (processional organ with bellows, harp, lute, clavichord, Bosendorfer piano). In front of each display case, you can listen to a short musical moment recorded on the instrument of your choice. The Salle des Chevaliers houses a collection of 17th-century Flemish and French tapestries, furniture, a collection of weapons dating from the 14th to the 19th century and, above all, one of the most important collections of Oriental portraits on the Old Continent. Under the brushstrokes of anonymous 17th-century painters, European monarchs take on the appearance of their Turkish counterparts. The Leslie family coat of arms bears the motto: Grip fast, meaning "hold fast". Walter Leslie was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece for his victories in the Thirty Years' War and his career as a diplomat in the service of the Emperor.

Curiosities include the 17th-century chapel with its off-axis altar, the Herberstein family clock collection, a secretary with marble and semi-precious stone marquetry, and the room lined with "chinoiseries". With carnival masks and kurent, the visit takes on an ethnographic profile. The museum also features works by France Mihelič (1907-1998).

The walls offer a good view of Celje, and the medieval torture mini-theater included in the tour will give you the chills. Numerous festivities are organized here, including a medieval festival with a gargantuan feast and concerts throughout the summer.

Castle built at the very beginning of the 14th century on a small hill that gives a nice view of the green region of Slovenj Gradec. In Gothic style, it briefly belonged to the Habsburgs before passing into the hands of owners who were less and less scrupulous about its upkeep. Today there is still a conglomeration of stones that looks a certain way. From the ruins you can observe the reign of nature in Slovenia with a 360-degree panorama.

Dating from the 15th century, the castle belonging to the winegrowing family Klakočar is on a hillock and hardly visible from the car park. The styles are mixed: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. SLOVENSKA BISTRICA CASTLE

Castles to visit

Renovation of this elegant castle began in 1985 and was completed some twenty years later, when it was listed as a protected Slovenian national heritage site. A variety of exhibits can be found here, including a room giving an overview of the region's wines and, in an adjoining room, an exhibition of the region's minerals. The trompe-l'oeil frescoes by Franz Flurer were created between 1717 and 1721. He worked in the Knights' Hall, the central staircase, the chapel and the rooms on the second floor. Greek mythology is still present, with deities such as Hercules, Poseidon, Zeus and Chronos, as well as the blue version of the 4 Seasons in medallions above the doors. Count Vettri had a French-style park laid out, whose reputation spread far beyond the borders of France. Today, only a quarter of it remains. The round tower with its polychrome Gothic vaults serves as a wedding hall. A collection of minerals and fossils, including some fine pieces, and prayer books were assembled by a local. 2 rooms are dedicated to the writer Anton Ingolič and Jože Tomačič, painter, writer, director and author of numerous tales and legends. More recent is the collection of dolls in traditional or folk costume. Opposite the collection of plates made in aid of Unicef is a blue-dressed doll donated by former Libyan leader Gaddafi. The upper part of the tower houses a fine collection of kerosene lamps. The ethnographic section includes pottery, ceramics and other everyday utensils of yesteryear. The chapel's altar is made of stone, which is not traditionally the case in the Štajerska region.

BORL CASTLE

Castles to visit

The castle is visible from afar, dominating the course of the Drava, and dates back to the 13th century. Over the course of its long history, it has changed ownership many times: for example, at the end of the 15th century, it belonged to the King of Hungary. After being burnt down in 1706, it was rebuilt, which explains its Baroque appearance. Until the mid-19th century, the castle was the seat of the provincial jurisdiction, and the gallows were not far away. After several years of restoration by the Cultural Association, it reopened in 2022.
