Today, Ferrara remains a family affair with fifth generation pastry chefs behind the stove. This institution claims to be the first espresso bar to open in the United States, we don't know if it's true, but in any case we love the authentic, no-frills setting and the rich cakes and ice cream. Try it at least once.

Le Petit Parisien is your little corner of France in Harlem! Stop in for a viennoiserie and a good coffee. Open since 1923, this tiny shop in NoLIta is one of the last vestiges of the real Little Italy. Push open the door of this butcher's shop with its red façade and half-faded sign, and you'll take a leap back in time. Family photos and retro atmosphere guaranteed. Order from Jennifer Prezioso, the great-granddaughter of the original owners and granddaughter of Moe Albanese, nicknamed Moe the Butcher, a local celebrity who passed away in 2020 at age 90. The meats and Italian charcuterie are excellent.
