In Tinos, the biggest religious celebration takes place every year on January 31 to mark the discovery of the miraculous icon at the place where the Panaghia Evangelistria was built following a vision of Saint Pelagia. The discovery of the Holy Icon in 1823 was considered an omen for the Turkish occupiers, while the construction of this imposing church represents the first great architectural work of the young Greek state. To be experienced today: a redoubled fervor in the Chora of Tinos and great feasts for the occasion in town.
