CACTUS ANTIGUA

Mexican restaurant

This is the place to be for Mexican food lovers. A tempting menu, where you can discover original combinations that garnish both burritos and tacos - served by four - like the fish marinated in a homemade beer and mustard sauce, accompanied by chipotle mayonnaise, avocado and red cabbage. The best seller: the bacon and shrimp one, served with melted cheese and avocado. Best for the evening, when the music is loud, the bar is lively and the tequila shots are flowing.

This Mexican restaurant opened its doors a few steps from the Arco de Santa Catalina in 1995. Several reasons explain its frequentation. First of all, the modernity of the place, decorated with care and paying homage to the artist Frida Kahlo, through the portraits hung here and there. The atmosphere, also, quite festive in the evening. Finally, the good food, among which the tacos are the most popular. The most popular are the "sonora con queso", cooked in charcoal with homemade flour tortillas, topped with guacamole, melted cheese and pico de gallo.

For 30 years, this small, quality chain has been serving Guatemalan cuisine in Guatemala City and, more recently, in Antigua. We sit at one of the tables located near the columns that frame the beautiful garden of the establishment, where the chirping of birds punctuates the meal. The "Cuatro Caminos" formula gives a good overview of the country's gastronomy, since it allows you to order four dishes from among nine specialties: Kak Ik, pepián, jocón, subanik, chicken caldo, or revolcado de marrano. Excellent and hearty.

Located in the beautiful patio of Centro Comercial la Fuente, this restaurant offers fine Guatemalan cuisine and homemade food. Special mention should be made of the tasty mushroom ceviche, tuna croquettes with coriander, corn soup and banana cheesecake prepared without flour, lactose, sugar or eggs; only with fruit and nuts. From appetizers, soups, main courses and desserts, all plates are delicately presented in a semi-gastronomic manner. All served by a welcoming staff. A favorite!

The entrance of this charming cultural center is decorated by a beautiful mural, in front of which one passes to reach the patio, where the bar is located. Relatively small, the space has some shops, such as a library, a fair trade store and galleries. Most importantly, there are three restaurants: El Fogón Histórico, specializing in grilled meats, Alquimia Bistro, a burger joint, and La Quita Penas. The latter is particularly original, revisiting the Guatemalan style of pizza, with preparations based on jocón or beans, among others.
