VTC ET TAXIS

Taxi and VTC

Uber is the fastest and safest way to get around the streets of the capital, especially since the prices are quite cheap. The alternative is to take a cab Amarillo - more expensive - to call in advance or order from your accommodation. If one can consider that to move with a driver rather than in Transmetro constitutes a luxury in daytime, it becomes essential the evening. Moreover, whatever the time of day, some places are more difficult to reach by public transport, such as Ciudad Cayalá.

UBER

Taxi and VTC

Although the city can be visited on foot, a vehicle will be necessary to go to its surroundings. Of course, chicken-buses serve villages such as Ciudad Vieja and San Juan del Obispo, but you will have to systematically go back to Antigua to discover a new place. The easiest way is to order an Uber, which is quite affordable. If you want to see as much as possible in a day or an afternoon, don't hesitate to negotiate a package deal with your driver, asking him to wait for you between each stop.

ALAMO

Car rental

This North American car rental agency is one of the most present in Guatemala. However, before you go to the store, don't hesitate to compare prices on sites such as Rental Cars. It's also worth noting that it's becoming increasingly difficult to get around and park in Antigua. So it may be a good idea to rent a car once your stay in the city is over. Other tips: don't drive after dark, and don't rely on the journey times indicated by Maps, as some roads are in fact impassable.

If the friendly Farah and Pablo organize excursions in Antigua and the surrounding villages, their establishment is especially famous for the two-day trek on the Acatenango volcano. Attentive guides, delicious and hearty meals, complete equipment, quality material, comfortable camp...: everything is carefully thought out. Also, more than an agency, CA Travelers is a real social project: not only eco-responsible, it works with local communities and has launched a scholarship to educate young indigenous girls. Not to be missed!

GARE ROUTIÈRE

Bus station
Recommended by a member

This is where the chicken buses gather before leaving the city. They go to Guatemala City - 40 km away - in about 1.5 hours, to Chimaltenango - 20 km - in 45 minutes and to Escuintla - 35 km - in almost an hour. They also serve the villages around Antigua, such as Ciudad Vieja, San Juan del Obispo and Santa María de Jesús. Despite their low prices, it is best to limit your trips by truck to these direct routes, unless you have time to make one or more changes.

NEWAY TOURS

The agency provides daily shuttle transfers between Antigua and El Paredón, the must-see spot for surfers and travelers looking for relaxation, beautiful sunsets on the beach and festive evenings. To make a reservation, simply contact the establishment directly via WhatsApp or go through the reception of your accommodation. This is the easiest and quickest way to get to the Pacific coast, as a chicken-bus ride requires several changes, including a first one in Escuintla, where it can be difficult to find your way around.

TRANSMETRO

Public transport buses and coaches
Recommended by a member

This modernized network of green buses can be spotted from a distance and serves most of the capital's tourist attractions. Although caution is advised, its seven lines are a safe - and very inexpensive - way to get around. To board the Transmetro, you must buy a Tarjeta at the station. However, it is common for day-trippers to do without. To do so, simply explain your situation to one of the police officers waiting at the stops: they will let you pay only the fare.
