Timetable
Shopping centers are open every day of the year, generally from 10am to 9pm. Stores close on different days.
Budget & Tips
The ¥100 stores, such as Daiso or Can Do, are ubiquitous. Some offer a wide selection of souvenirs and typical Japanese objects, some even made locally. The big cities are also home to numerous second-hand stores specializing in crockery, clothing or electronics, such as the famous "OFF" chain (BookOFF, HardOFF, etc.). Last but not least, flea markets can be a great source of surprises and unique finds.
Sales
Sales start in January and July, but stores have discount periods throughout the year. During sales, you'll sometimes see fukubukuro. These are bags whose contents you can't see, but the value of all the products inside is greater than the price of the bag.
What's very local
In fitting rooms, it is customary to remove shoes before entering. The staff sometimes offer a paper film to slip over the face, to prevent make-up or perspiration from staining the clothes. Haggling is not practiced in Japan, even in small stores. As for shopping malls, they often have well-equipped nursing rooms, sometimes veritable lounges, with hot water at bottle temperature, sofas, changing tables and even play areas for toddlers.
