Chernivtsi, also known as Chernovtsy, Chernowitz, Cernăuți and Czernowitz, is a Ukrainian city in the Chernivtsi oblast. It is the traditional center of Bucovina. The city is watered by the Prut River and surrounded by hills, forests and fields. Its city center lies around 115 km southeast of Ivano-Frankivsk, 143 km south of Ternopil, 148 km southwest of Khmelnytskyï and 408 km southwest of Kiev. Chernivtsi has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century. According to some sources, it was founded between 1153 and 1187, then destroyed in 1259 during the Mongol invasion. Other sources attribute the town's foundation to Moldavian voivode Bogdan de Cuhea in 1359. Chernivtsi is famous for its university and its main monuments in the city center.

Ivano-Frankivsk has a small airport to reach Kiev. The airport was banned for international lines in 2007, flights from Kiev (1 hour 15) are often cancelled in winter. The taxi ride from the centre costs about 100 UAH and takes about minutes.
