The Rocket Festival is a traditional event with a competition of fireworks throwing crafts.
The "Rocket Festival" is a traditional event to invoke the return of rain before the resumption of rice cultivation. The atmosphere is one of release: songs, feasts, drinking and sometimes even cross-dressing. The festival ends with a contest of throwing handcrafted fireworks (bamboos filled with gunpowder), supposed to come and titillate the clouds and trigger the rain. This festival is mainly celebrated in the villages around Vientiane.
