Cap Fréhel in Plévenon, home to a lighthouse and a square tower of 32 m high, classified as a historical monument since 2011

It's one of the most spectacular spots in the region: in Plévenon, Cap Fréhel - a Grand Site de France label - rises 70 m above the waves on its pink sandstone cliffs. From here, the view over the emerald expanse and the coast is breathtaking: when the sky is clear, you can see as far as Paimpol on one side and the Cotentin peninsula on the other.

The panorama is even more impressive from the top of the lighthouse, more than 100 m above the sea. This emblematic 32 m-high square tower has been listed as a Monument Historique since 2011. It is one of the 5 most powerful lighthouses in France, with a range from 200 m in dense fog to 120 km in fine weather. It was built in 1950, after the previous structure was blown up by the Germans in 1944. All that remains of the previous lighthouse, lit in 1702, is the Vauban tower.

The cape is criss-crossed by paths winding through the heather and gorse of the moors: a landscape of great beauty when both are in bloom, from spring to autumn, and superbly desolate in winter. It's also an ornithological reserve, where you can spot many different species of nesting birds: razorbill, northern fulmar, black-legged kittiwake, herring or seagull, crested cormorant... Cap Fréhel is the starting point for many beautiful walks: for example, to reach Fort La Latte, allow 1h30 on foot, along the coastal path. Be sure to park in the fort's parking lot for hikes: parking at Cap Fréhel is limited to a maximum of 3 hours.

A faire absolument.
