OELENBERG ABBEY

Abbey monastery and convent

Founded in 1046, it was originally a monastery of regular canons of Saint Augustine. Located on one of the last hills of the Sundgau, the building has had a turbulent history and has been partially destroyed several times. During the Revolution, the abbey was sold and it was in 1825 that Trappist monks settled there. They still live according to the Cistercian rule of poverty. The monastic shop sells flour and pasta produced at the Oelenberg mill. They also welcome the faithful for spiritual retreats.

Visit Points of interest

Notre-Dame d'Oelenberg Abbey is a monastery of Cistercian Trappist monks located in Reiningue, near Mulhouse. Founded in the 11th century, it is now occupied by a community of Cistercian monks. The abbey's current buildings date back to the 12th century, and include the Chapel of St. Leo IX, consecrated by the Pope himself in 1049. The abbey also boasts a library containing over one hundred thousand books. Visitors can admire some ancient architectural features, such as the lower part of the 12th-century chapel choir, the 15th-century transept of the former abbey church and the 18th-century Baroque nave. Precious religious objects, such as a 12th-century processional cross, a large 14th-century crucifix and 15th- and 18th-century statues of Notre-Dame, are also preserved.
