The Botan-en peony garden is one of the most remarkable in Japan. Covering an area three times the size of Tokyo Dome, it is home to some 7,000 peonies of over 290 varieties. Botanical rarities include plants over 200 years old, the "Showa-no-yume", a variety unique to Sukagawa, and a rare Chinese peony, donated by sister city Luoyang. The garden is classified as a Site of Natural Beauty by the State.
