TEMPLE TENDAIJI
In the heart of the Ninohe mountains, Tendaiji temple, founded in 728, is one of the oldest in the Tohoku region. This sacred site, affectionately nicknamed "Oyama" by the locals, welcomes visitors in a peaceful atmosphere of hydrangeas and centuries-old cedars. This Buddhist Mecca is also considered the cradle of Joboji lacquerware, whose techniques were born here, in the service of sacred statuary. It owes its modern renaissance to the writer Jakucho Setouchi, who revived its popularity with her famous public sermons.
