LAC TOWADA
Located in the heart of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Lake Towada is a must-see natural destination in Tohoku. This caldera lake, formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, stretches 46 km in circumference and reaches a depth of 327 metres, making it the third deepest in Japan. Nicknamed "the mystical lake", it fascinates visitors with its impressive longevity and the fact that it never freezes, even in the depths of winter in this mountainous northern region. Surrounded by a dense forest dominated by beech trees, Towada-ko (in Japanese) offers an ever-changing spectacle through the seasons. In spring, the flowers bloom, summer unveils a bower of greenery, and in autumn, the lake blazes with flamboyant colors thanks to the maple and beech trees. The calm waters are also a perfect reflection of Mount Towada, for a truly photogenic ambience. To fully appreciate the lake, there's nothing better than a trip on one of the excursion boats that ply the lake from April to November (adult fare: ¥1,650, child fare: ¥880). Around the lake, the scenic route invites you to stop at numerous observation points, revealing spectacular views of the caldera and lush vegetation. In winter, the region is transformed into a magical landscape where frozen waterfalls and snow-covered forests can be discovered on snowshoes or free skis. On the Nakayama peninsula, the Towada-jinja sanctuary, dedicated to the water dragon god, bears witness to the region's deep-rooted spirituality.
