Shiroishi Castle, also known as Masuoka-jō, is a strong symbol of the city. Originally built on a hill for strategic advantage, it became the residence of the Katakura clan, vassals of the Date, for over two centuries. Protected despite Tokugawa laws limiting fortresses, it played a key role in the Boshin War. Dismantled during the Meiji era, it was faithfully rebuilt in wood in 1995. Today, its large tower, unique in its size, attracts history buffs from all over the country. Nice view from the top floor.
