MONT TIANMEN

Perched high above the spectacular Zhangjiajie landscape, Mount Tianmen is a natural and spiritual wonder that seems to defy the laws of gravity. Located in Mount Tianmen National Park, just a few kilometers from Zhangjiajie railway station, it is the region's second major natural attraction after Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. At a height of 1,518 metres, this mountain is a masterpiece of nature, well worth spending a few hours on.

The ascent often begins with an unforgettable ride aboard the world's longest cable car, with its 7.5 kilometers linking the city of Zhangjiajie to the mountain's summit. In just 30 minutes, the cabins pass through the clouds, offering breathtaking views of impressive precipices and verdant valleys. For those who prefer the road, the famous "Avenue to Heaven", a succession of 99 tight bends winding along the cliffs for 11 km, is a driving challenge and a breathtaking spectacle. Bus no. 10 runs from Zhangjiajie station to the Tianmen cable car, and cabs are also available.

But the highlight of the trip, the one that has earned Tianmen its mystical reputation, is of course the Heaven Gate (/天门), an immense 131-metre-high natural arch cut into the cliff. Accessible after a climb of 999 steps, or for those who prefer to avoid the effort, an escalator (32 RMB), this arch is considered a gateway between the terrestrial world and the celestial realm according to local beliefs. One of them tells of a Tang emperor who saw the arch as a divine omen, while another recalls a Buddhist monk who, after years of meditation, attained enlightenment by crossing this natural gateway.

For the more adventurous, Mount Tianmen holds even more thrills in store. Its glass walkways, including the famous "Skywalk", offer a breathtaking view of the abyss below. Walking on these transparent platforms is as exhilarating as it is intimidating, guaranteeing an unforgettable adrenalin rush.

Last but not least, Tianmen is home to one of the region's most revered Buddhist temples, the Tianmenshan Temple, whose history dates back over 1,500 years. Between nature, spirituality and thrills, Mount Tianmen is an invitation to explore and contemplate. Not to be missed!
