The Chalbi Desert lies in a triangle between Masarbit, North Horr and the eastern shore of Lake Turkana and extends almost to the Ethiopian border. It is crossed on the road that goes from Masarbit to North Horr. It is an extremely harsh environment, an ocean of dunes where only the most resistant species survive. Its volcanic rock sand is rough and hot, and does not shelter any oasis. Two nomadic tribes, pastoralists and camel drivers, live there: the Rendille and the Gabbra. Rains are very rare in the Chalbi, but when they occur, the desert turns into a huge ocean of mud
