Located in the southernmost part of the province, not far from the U.S. border, the community of Coronach was founded in 1926 by the Canadian Pacific Railway and incorporated two years later. It was named after the horse that won the Derby in England that year. It is best known for two things: its coal mine, the Poplar River Mine operated by Westmorland Mining Holdings LLC, and the Big Muddy Badlands, a very arid and rugged area with ravines and caves. Since much of this natural area is privately owned, a guided tour of the area is a must.
