Nearly 200 km from Abidjan, Abengourou is a large city in the east with more than 120,000 inhabitants. It is the stronghold of the Agni kingdom in Côte d'Ivoire and is located on the border with Ghana. The region is not touristy. It is halfway along the road to Bondoukou further north. Every year in February, there is a big Yam Festival. A celebration linking the living and the dead that marks the beginning of the new year for the N'Dênian people. Storytelling and legend competitions, sports games, Zouglou concerts and a masked ball at the Royal Court punctuate this festive event that brings together many people.
