Listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2006, the Kondoa rock art site is a kind of East African Lascaux, in the open air and spread over almost 230,000 hectares. The site, located 160 kilometers north of Dodoma, is well worth a visit, especially as very few adventurers make it this far. Drawn by hand or brush on the rock, over 1,500 paintings depict scenes of life, death and hunting, with the oldest dating back to 28,000 BC. A spectacular collection of prehistoric images that has survived the centuries, despite the acts of vandalism deplored in recent decades. These paintings are still part of the traditions of the Sandawe in their simbó healing ceremonies and of the Maasai during ritual feasts. Most of the paintings are located on the eastern slopes of the Irangi hills, some 30 km from the village of Kolo, the starting point for excursions.
