A celebration linked to the culture of the Edo people, which renews the powers of the Oba for the New Year.
Originating in the Kingdom of Benin, this celebration is linked to the culture of the Edo people, who at New Year renew the powers of the Oba - traditional chief - while commemorating the Oba who have passed away. The festival takes place over two weeks, with the main ceremonies taking place between Christmas and New Year in Benin City, and sees the Oba bless his people and his land for the new cycle to come. The Ugie Ewere, celebrated at the palace in the presence of traditional chiefs and priests, is one of the highlights of the festival.
