Cable car for an escapade to discover the wonders of Punta Rocca.
Malga Ciapela (1,450 m) is the starting point for the cable car to Punta Rocca (3,263 m). A magical moment! On the way, there is an interesting museum of the Great War at the Serauta station (2,950 m). Far from exhibiting two or three dusty stories, this museum is interactive and is, as a bonus, the highest in Europe. It retraces the strategic positioning of the Dolomites in the war between Austria and Italy. A murderous and trying mountain war, which took place between 2,000 and 3,000 metres above sea level, known as the "White War", in the snow and cold. More astonishing, the Grotta della Madonna, consecrated by John Paul II during his visit to the Marmolada in 1970, is a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, symbol of peace. It is dug into the rock but accessible by lift inside the cable car station, strange and confusing! Finally at the top, you reach the panoramic terrace with a 360° view from the roof of the Dolomites. To come back down, you have to take the longest piste in the Dolomites in winter, which is 12 km long and 1,810 metres high. It is a long descent that can be enjoyed over and over again. Don't forget to leave early because the chairlift connections are long to get to the top. There are several mountain restaurants on the slopes of the Marmolada, the rifugio Padon offers good food at reasonable prices with a panoramic view of Lake Fedaia.
